    Over 545 Buckeyes were manufactured for the US Navy, 231 of which were the T2C variant, first delivered in 1969. The aircraft is very basic, with all-analogue gauges and was used for advanced training including bombing, gunnery and fighter tactics and carrier qualification. Venezuela and Greece both acquired T-2 variants; Venezuela’s surviving aircraft include 10 weapons-capable T2Ds and 9 trainers and Greece has 36. The T2C has been replaced in US service by the T45C, but only about 40% of the average Buckeye airframe fatigue life has been used up and some T2Cs still have up to 70% of their available airframe life left. The Buckeye is said to be easy to maintain, with most components easily accessible, and has a lower accident rate than almost all other military aircraft.

    The T2C normally has two hardpoints for practice bombs but a weapons kit is available to provide up to 6 hardpoints for up to 3,500 lbs of ordnance. In US service some T2Cs had gunpods but these were removed after one Buckeye shot down an A-4 Skyhawk towing a target decoy.

    Considered the international benchmark for mine protection. Offers high mobility, ease of handling and crew comfort. Over 2000 have been produced and these serve in the armed forces of South Africa, India and Peru, among many others.

    Originally developed for the rigorous conditions of South Africa, Casspir, with its V-shaped armored hull, is certified to protect its occupants against the effects of a triple TM-57 mine blast equivalent to 21kg of TNT) under any wheel, or a double mine (14kg of TNT) anywhere under the hull. Doors in the rear of the hull allow easy access. The Casspir is highly regarded for its outstanding cross-country mobility and for its reliability, although India has expressed reservations about the refurbished vehicles it acquired.

    U.S. NAVY
    PACIFIC FLEET FLAGSHIP CVN ENTERPRISE? 2010? NEWEST AIRCRAFT CARRIER
    ATLANTIC FLEET FLAGSHIP USS RONALD REAGAN

    It’s time to return some sanity to the way ships are named. Why? Because the silliness is upon us once again:

    111th CONGRESS 1st Session H. CON. RES. 83 Expressing the sense of Congress that a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the Navy, either the aircraft carrier designated as CVN-79 or the aircraft carrier designated as CVN-80, should be named the U.S.S. Barry M. Goldwater.

    Whereas the namesake ENTERPRISE has been proudly borne by two combat aircraft carriers of the United States Navy;
    Whereas the first USS ENTERPRISE (CV-6) (seventh ship to bear this name) and her embarked airwing and crew gallantly fought in every major battle in the Pacific during World War Two, including the signatory battle at Midway when vastly outnumbered by the ships and planes of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Combined Fleet, ENTERPRISE, with YORKTOWN and HORNET struck a mortal blow, sinking four enemy aircraft carriers and turning the tide of the war in the Pacific;
    Whereas the same ENTERPRISE concluded that war as the most decorated warship in the United States Navy with 20 battle stars, a Presidential Unit Citation, a British Admiralty Pennant, Navy Unit Commendation, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, and Task Force 16 Citation among many other accolades;
    Whereas the second United States Navy aircraft carrier to be named ENTERPRISE (CVAN/CVN-65) was the first such ship of her class in the world to be nuclear powered;
    Whereas that ENTERPRISE, the eighth ship to bear that name in the United States Navy is concluding a half-century of service to this nation and has honorably served in every theater of operations from leading the naval quarantine off Cuba in 1962 to conducting the first strikes following the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11th, 2001;

    Be It Resolved
    That the next nuclear aircraft carrier to be constructed (CVN-79) should bear the name USS ENTERPRISE in recognition and honor of the fighting men and women of the United States Navy who have sailed in her namesakes through the centuries.

    The Government will equip the Australian Army with a fleet of 59 United States M1A1 Abrams Integrated Management main battle tanks to replace the ageing Leopards, Defence Minister Robert Hill announced today.

    The project cost is about $550 million.

    The Abrams tanks are significantly more capable than the current tank and will contribute to the Army becoming more lethal in future close combat.

    The Government accepted Defence’s advice that the Abrams is the best capability and the best value for money with the lowest risk of the three replacement tank options examined.

    Senator Hill said the new tanks would be introduced into service from 2007 and would be based with 1st Brigade in the Northern Territory.

    “The tanks will be used by the Army to provide increased firepower, mobility and survivability for our soldiers on the battlefield,” Senator Hill said.

    “They will also improve the Army’s

    Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, today announced that submariners in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) will benefit from pressurised submarine escape training being reinstated following the signing of a contract with The Underwater Centre Fremantle (TUCF).

    “This contract will enable pressurised escape training to recommence at the Submarine Escape Training Facility (SETF) at HMAS Stirling,” Mr Combet said.

    “The contract represents an important step in regaining local training capacity and will allow submariners to gain and maintain their qualifications quicker, in alignment with Navy’s submarine sustainability strategy.”

    “The SETF simulates the escape from a Collins Class submarine including the effects of water pressure. Provision of pressurised submarine escape training is a critical component in the submariner training continuum.”

    “TUCF will provide instructors to supply SETF services, including in-water submarine escape simulation.”

    THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY BUYING SUBMARINES AND AIRCRAFT
    CARRIERS IN THE FOLLOWING DECADES
    DO THE PEOPLE OF AUSTRALIA KNOW ABOUT THIS??
    DO AUSTRALIANS FAVOUR MILITARIZATION??

    The Collins class is a class of six Australian-built diesel-electric submarines operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The Collins class takes its name from Australian Vice Admiral John Augustine Collins, with the other five submarines named after significant RAN personnel who distinguished themselves in action during World War II. The boats are the largest conventionally-powered submarines in the world, and were the first submarines to be constructed in Australia, prompting widespread improvements in Australian industry.

    Planning for the class began in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as a replacement for the Oberon class submarines operated by the RAN at the time. Proposals were received from seven companies, with two selected for a funded study, and the winning design announced in mid-1987. The submarines, an enlarged version of Swedish shipbuilder Kockums’ Västergötland class and originally referred to as the Type 471, were constructed between 1990 and 2003 in South Australia by the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC).

    John Faulkner, Minister for Defence and Greg Combet, Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science, today announced that Defence will call for Requests for Tender (RFT) to complete a Domestic Design Study for the Future Submarine Project, SEA 1000.

    “The procurement of Australia’s future submarine will be Australia’s largest ever single defence project and will form a critical part of the nation’s future defence force,” said Senator Faulkner.

    “Investigations by the Future Submarine Project Office to date have covered a number of diverse areas aimed at developing an understanding of the capability of the international submarine industry.”

    “This RFT adds to these preliminary investigations by examining Australia’s design capabilities, and forms part of a program of studies being undertaken to support the planning of Australia’s future submarines as outlined in the Defence White Paper,” said Senator Faulkner.

    “The RFT would add to current information collected to help shape the approach to the design of the next generation submarine.”

    “We are undertaking a number of studies to identify and explore all the options to ensure we have the appropriate design capability to support our submarines throughout their life. The information we collect through this process will help to develop strategic options for the Government’s consideration,” said Mr Combet.

    “This Government is committed to carefully planning for Australia’s next generation of submarines. This is clear through the program of studies and information we are gathering.”

    “This request for tender recognises the skills that our Australian domestic defence industry has in the design and development of submarine technologies and systems,” Mr Combet said
